Pride and Prejudice - review Essay Example for Free

Pride and Prejudice review EssayJane Austen was born on December 16, 1775 to the Reverend George Austen and his wife in Hampshire, England. The sixth child taboo of the seven, Jane was educated mostly at her home although she and her infant, Cassandra, were sent away to school for several years when they were young. Austen wrote several novels when she was in her teens, but her major works were create verbally later on in her life.Pride and Prejudice, was first published in 1813. Austen began writing the novel in 1796 at the age of twenty-one. The first title was primitively called First Impressions. Between 1810 and 1812 Pride and Prejudice was rewritten for publication. Pride and Prejudice is usually considered to be the most popular of Austens novels. This novel is mainly approximately people expressing some(prenominal) primp and prejudice in their bloods. The main theme of the novel is sum, which reoccurs throughout the story and it is marriage which attracted Lydia to run collide with with Mr Wickham. There is pressure on women of these time to marry properly this is because the women need to get financial safety, non for sightly themselves, but likewise for their families too. In this novel the most important cause of marriage for a woman were financially and a high social position. The first filiation of the novel justifies this and explains what the novel is about. It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a adept man in possessionof a favourable fortune, must be in deprivation of a wife(Chapter 1)This is a wonderful introductory line written by Jane Austen to introduce and outline much of this romantic novel. There argon various reactions of Lydia waiver to B disciplineon by the white avens family as they all feed their own response and thoughts.Mr. Bennet is the husband of Mrs. Bennet and the father of Elizabeth, Jane, Mary, mass and Lydia. He is the master of Longbourn. He has a sarcastic humor intelligent and believes his d evil eldest daughters sensible, while he finds his wife and younger daughters silly. He does wants to be bothered as little as possible by his family. Even when Elizabeth warns him non to allow Lydia to go to Brighton, he does not listen to her because he does not want to be bothered with Lydias complaints.Mrs. Bennet is a diametrical person does not authentically care about her daughters education. From the beginning of the novel her only obsession is to marry off her daughters to wealthy men, as she has a greed for wealth. Her only joys make do from visiting others and gossip. She is a egoistical person and causes humiliation to the family due to her inappropriate behavior.Elizabeth Bennet is the second oldest of five sisters. Elizabeth is lively, smart, and intelligent. Her father and herself are not too different in their characteristics therefore she has a good relationship with her father and makes decisions wisely due to her intelligence. She is not scared to express her feelings and gets along with people real soundly except those who depend they are far more superior to her, for example Darcy in the beginning but later on through the novel Elizabeth discovers Darcy to be a fine gentleman.Jane Bennet is the eldest Bennet daughter and is considered quite pretty by all has a good relationship with Elizabeth. She is Beautiful, friendly, sweet, sociable, humble and noble. Jane neer thinks badly of anybody. tummy Bennet is the third daughter in the family, and she is more under the influence of Lydia, cunt follows what ever Lydia does. She effect by Lydia going off to Brighton.Mary Bennet The third oldest of the Bennet sisters, she is the most modest of the five daughters .She dislikes going out into the public, and uses her time studying instead.Lydia Bennet The youngest of the Bennet sisters, she is a self-centered girl who is the flirting kind. However she is the liveliest out of all the sisters. She is the first to get married despite her bein g a young teenager. She also has similar characteristics to her mother. She doesnt really care about her family members afterward her marriage. The various reactions of Lydia going to Brighton are mainly negative. This is due to Lydias ridiculous thinking. Shes an extremely self-absorbed teenager. She has a peachy interest in men and particularly officers. She begins flirting with them once they involve settled in the town and also admires and enjoys their presence, and exposes this in freely, in view of the fact that she has no shame. ascribable to her selfishness Lydia commits foolish acts which affect her and her report card and mostly has an effect on her family. She shows a negative impression of her family by eloping with Mr Wickham mainly because she also has another four sisters who are keen to get married and their chances of doing so have diminished. She does what she likes without thinking of the consequences to come. It is like she is in a world of her own and doesnt realise the bad reputation her family is create because of her immature behaviour.Lydia is invited be her friend to Brighton by Mrs. Forster. Mrs. Bennet is extremely excited and pleased for Lydias trip to Brighton and wished all the best for her.Mrs Bennet was diffuse in her good wishes for the felicity of her daughter and impressive in her injunctions that she would not miss the opportunity of enjoying herself as much as possible(Chapter 41)Mrs. Bennet was totally trusting Lydia to go Brighton and thought she was old and mature to take care of her self, awareness to what the entire family is going to face shortly and how it get out effect her sisters chances of marriage.Lydia begins celebrating she is thrilled, perhaps because of the reason that she will be with the presence of the regiment.Lydia Flew about the house in restless ecstasy, calling for all(prenominal)ones congratulations, and laughing and talking(Chapter 41)She showed this excitement by roaming the house in happi ness. She was awareness about her sister Kittys feelings and how degraded she feels, lonely and neglected. Kitty doesnt understand why Mrs. Forster doesnt ask her to come to Brighton too.I washbowlnot see why Mrs. Forster should not ask me as sanitary as Lydia(Chapter 41)Kitty as mentioned before follows Lydia in what ever she does and feels as though that she should be going as well due to her close relationship with Lydia. She becomes extremely upset, expressive and is envious towards Lydia. The separation mingled with her and her family was rather noisy and pathetic. Kitty was the only one who shed tears but she did weep from anger and envy.(Chapter 41)Kitty was mostly envious towards Lydia because of her trip to Brighton she was jealous and she wanted to go as much as her sister wanted to go.. She is saddened by the fact that Mrs. Forster requests Lydia to go and not her and cant do anything about it.Though I am not her particular friend. I have just as much right to be asked as she has, and more too, for I am two years older.(Chapter 41)Kitty cannot accept the fact that she will not be going and exposes her frustration.Kitty gradually becomes resentful of Lydias attention. Lydia is unaware of Kitty because of her self-centeredness. Lydia and Kitty are very similar to one another when talking about their characteristics due to this, if Kitty would have gone she would have copied Lydias interest of men, and whitethorn have also began flirting just like her sister, and soon enough eloping with an officer and getting married just like Lydia. So by Kitty not going she may perhaps have been saved by the hazard she may have set about if she were to go.However, Elizabeth as the second oldest, was entirely aware of the situation and Lydias potential and capability, and is worried of what may occur if Lydia does go to Brighton.Mr. Bennet is a person who doesnt not want to be bothered by his families problems so as a result he does not think about the damage Ly dia may cause if she goes. Mr. Bennet just wants quiet and peace by letting Lydia go perhaps he has the impression that there will be less botheration from his family. As mentioned before, Elizabeth has the same distinctiveness as her father and realizes that Lydia is not mature enough to go to Brighton so she tries and convince her father to think twice. If you were aware. said Elizabeth, of the very great disadvantage to us all, which must arise from the public notice of Lydias unguarded and imprudent manner nay, which has already arisen from it, I am sure you would judge other than in the affair.(Chapter 41)Elizabeth is worried about Lydia going to Brighton and is trying her best to change her fathers mind and trying to stop her father giving Lydia permission to go. She also thinks that Kitty may be affected by this and points this out.In this danger Kitty is also comprehended. She will follow wherever Lydia leads. Vain, ignorant, idle, and absolutely uncontrolled (Chapter 41)Kitty follows Lydia in everything she does and Elizabeth realises this and is concerned, and mentions it. Elizabeth also expresses her frustration also by telling her father how the rest of the family can also be affected.Mr. Bennet is well aware of Lydia and her capabilities and her attitude towards men, specially officers, but simply doesnt care and wants her to leave for the good of the town and possibly the family, as he mentions this to Elizabeth. We shall have no peace at Longbourn if Lydia does not go to Brighton.(Chapter 41)This quotation shows us that Mr. Bennet has no concern about his daughters and cant be bothered. He fails to complete his duties as a proper father to the family. It may have been because of him not listening to Elizabeth that the bad reputation that Lydia soon gives to the family. This may have happened because of his immature behavior as a father.Despite the argument between Elizabeth and her father, Lydia is still sent to Brighton. After sometime the situati on in Longbourn improves and Kitty overcomes her emotions.Later Elizabeth begins to have feelings for Darcy and is quite thrilled when she hears that she is going to meet him while on a trip with her aunty Mrs. Gardiner.Elizabeth arrives at Pemberley where Mr. Darcy was also. Her relationship with Darcy was improving on a regularly for the duration of her stay. She discovered what type of man Darcy actually is. She also gets to meet Georgiana Darcy the sister of Darcy. She is found very pleasant and charming to Elizabeth by surprise. While Elizabeth was on her trip she receives letters, one of them stating that Lydia had eloped with Mr. Wickham, she was shaken by the message and totally astonished that her sister had done such a thing. The emotions Elizabeth was going through made her burst in tears. She burst into tears as she alluded to it and for a a couple of(prenominal) minutes could not speak another word,(Chapter 46)Elizabeth is obviously in disbelief and in shock. She is worr ies about Lydia and the reputation and shame she have bought on the family, she must be also worried about her father feeling because it was his idea to allow Lydia to go in the first place.Lydia-the humiliation, the misery, she was bringing on them all, soon swallowed up every private care.(Chapter 46)Jane expresses her devastation and requests that Elizabeth to return as soon as possible since there is disorder and astonishment from this shameless act by Lydia. The whole family regrets sending Lydia to Brighton. M r. Bennet is going through an immensely tense emotional situation. Mr Bennet on the other hand, handles the case with ease and isnt extremely stress compared to the rest of the family is. Kitty was told about the news and was not surprised at all, as if she was expecting it from her sister. To Kitty, however, it does not seem so wholly unexpected.(Chapter 47)Jane points out this in her letter. Kitty already has negative feelings about this matter and wasnt really surpri sed. Elizabeth is totally overwhelmed by sad emotions mostly due to her absence and her concern for Lydia.Mr Darcy becomes aware of this situation and decides to think of a solution to the problem, as he is trying to build up a relationship with Lydia, this could be the chance to show he cares about her and her family and can feel the pain she is going through whilst thinking about the awful reputation that her family will have to face later on.The Bennets were completely disgraced by this and were mocked and looked bad upon by the community. However, there was still a way for the family to get rid of the reputation, which the family desperately hoped for that to happen was for Wickham to marry Lydia, as that was vital for a pause future for the family, especially the sisters as they still have to get married.Mr Darcy shortly takes action and meets Wickham, and completes Wickhams demands by paying off all his debts off which then soon encouraged Wickham to decide on marring Lydia.W hile everyone was miserable and disgusted by Lydias untrustworthiness and selfishness they were quite soon relieved, after hearing that Wickham was due to marry Lydia. Darcys attendance was very important in this and he also deserves an immense amount of praise for doing the right thing and sort out the problem in which Elizabeth was going through.. The matter is soon solved and Lydia is back together along with her family. She feel proud that she is the first out of the five daughters to get married and her parents are very proud too especially their mother as she was excited for her daughters marriages.ConclusionPride and Prejudice is a book in which we can be taught that having pride and arrogance is not liked to have in your individuality as a person. It destroys your status inside a community an example of this from the book is Mr Darcy, who in due course shows his true qualities and changes from a disliked person to well-likedLydia is a cheerful young lady after her wedding wh ich Mr. Darcy showed by returning the Bennets family reputation the right way by speaking and encouraging his friend Mr. Wickham to marry Lydia as soon as possibleOn the other hand, her other sister Elizabeth finds herself a man who can become a great husband for her. Mr Darcy establishes this constantly because of his support to Elizabeth and his . Mr and Mrs Bennet, Jane, Kitty and Mary are all happy for Lydia after the family come together after her marriage ceremony.. The elopement of a woman with a man was very common at that time. As we can see from Mrs Bennets reaction it is a painful experience upon the mother as well as the entire family. The whole community changes their sight about the Bennet family due to a self-centred person shift by Lydia. The story also gives us an image of how romance and relationships took place during that time enabling us to compare and argumentation it with the present and we can see what sort of relationships went on between the men and women of the 19th centuryIt all shows that how one person and by a mistake can destroy the family and effect everyone else in the family especially the parents.

Contemporary Theories of Reasoning: An Analysis

Contemporary Theories of Reasoning An AnalysisComputational and algorithmic challenges to contemporary theories of debateKattja MadrellReasoning is the process of using given development to redact valid mop ups and produce new information (Goel Dolan, 2003) base on a combination of whimsys and language of legal feeling (Fodor, 2001).The language of thought hypothesis proposed by Fodor (2001) states that thought and thinking occurs in a mental language mental representations of reasoning atomic number 18 like sentences and this is why language of thought is or sotimes also cognise as Mentalese (Murat 2010). Fodor (2001) admitted, however, that language of thought alone could non be used to explain reasoning instead a combination of language of thought and a mortals belief is now accepted as the basis of human reasoning. Evans, Barston, Pollard (1983) found that a persons beliefs about the conclusion of an seam influenced whether or not they deemed that conclusion to be valid the truth value of a conclusion was based upon its coherent relationship to a belief (Goel Dolan, 2003).Marrs Levels of Analysis (1982) is a tri- direct hypothesis that provides us with a critical framework to analyse and evaluate models of psychology thoroughly and consistently. There ar deuce-ace contrastive levels the computational level, the algorithmic level and the implementational level. In the field of cognitive psychology these levels befuddle also been referred to as the semantic, the syntactic, and the physical (Pylyshyn, 1984).Marr (1982) describes the three levels of analysis as the following1. Computational Theory the goal of the computation, why is it appropriate, and what is the logic of the strategy by which it lav be carried out?2. Representation and algorithm How can this computational theory be implemented? In particular, what is the representation for the input and output, and what is the algorithm for the transformation?3. Hardware implementation How can the representation and algorithm be agnize physically? In other words, the computational level of analysis is concerned with what the model or system in question does and why does it do so. The algorithmic level builds upon this and analyses the way in which the system performs its computation whilst the implementational level is concerned with the way in which the system is physically implemented. Each level is a acknowledgment of the level before it providing a more love explanation of the system than its predecessor. This allows for the preservation of many of the properties of inter-level relationships in complex systems (McClamrock, 1991).This essay will discuss some of the critical issues and challenges to various contemporary theories of reasoning using Marrs levels of analysis.Monotonic reasoning is based upon a series of rational rules. These rules are strict, rigid and cannot be altered by the addition of new information instead this leads to the production of n ew beliefs (Brachman Levesque, 2004). In the absence of justifications that would take a shit a rule non- categorical, we use monotonic reasoning as a default (Lakemeyer Nebel, 1994).For utilizationA bass guitar (A) has four strings (B)A = B.James instrument (C) is a bass guitar (A)A = C so James instrument (C) has four strings (B)(C = B)This is an example of monotonic reasoning the rules are consistent and based on logic and do not appear to be problematic. But what happens when we learn that Jamess bass guitar actually has five strings? Reasoning monotonically forces us to learn a new rule (A = B) that contradicts a rule that is already known to be true (A = B).The principle of contradiction proposes that statements which contract each other such as a bass guitar has four strings and a bass guitar does not have four strings are mutually exclusive and cannot both be true in the same sense at the same time (Whitehead Russell, 1912). Monotonic reasoning displays a computationa l crisis when faced with logically contradicting information as the rules cannot be manipulated or altered, the goal of the reasoning cannot be achieved. As we gain new information on various things on a regular basis, it is improper to reason monotonically, like in classical logic (Isaac, Szymanik Verbrugge, 2013), as we will not be able to incorporate any new information to our realized beliefs. It stands to reason that the only appropriate time to rely on monotonic reasoning is when in a situation in which one has complete friendship this, however, is still risky as one may believe that they have complete knowledge of a situation as long as they are not aware of any reason or state to suspect otherwise, demonstrating a false belief of what is known as the Closed World Assumption, an example of non-monotonic reasoning (Etherington, 1986)Non-monotonic reasoning is computationally more complex than monotonic reasoning with its main forms all sharing the same level of complexity (Eiter Gottlob, 1992). This is because the system is pliable and based on various different connections being made. Unlike in monotonic reasoning, the addition of new information that may be contradictive of beliefs already held can alter what is already known this occurs in two main ways belief revision and belief update. Belief revision is the addition of new information into a set of gray beliefs without any logical contradictions or inconsistencies preserving as much information as possible. Belief update is the changing (or updating) of old beliefs to take into account any differences (Grdenfors, 2003).Non-monotonic reasoning leads to common-sense conclusions being drawn that are based upon the combination of both supporting evidence and the lack of contradictory evidence Monotonic reasoning encounters problems with this due to the fact that the beliefs being levelheaded about do not consider the absence of knowledge (Etherington, 1986). Non-monotonic reasoning shows a leve l of tautology that is not present in its monotonic counterpart as beliefs are revised or updated to incorporate new information they become harder to negate. establish the previous exampleA bass guitar (A) has four strings (B)A = BJames instrument (C) is a bass guitar (A)A = CTherefore James instrument (C) has four strings (B)(C = B)We now know that the bass guitar in question has 5 strings. Using non-monotonic reasoning we can now advance our initial belief that a bass guitar has four strings so that it now showsA bass guitar (A) usually has four strings (B) unless it does not have four strings (B)A = B unless A = BThis example demonstrates a common display of default reasoning (Reiter, 1980) statistically most As are Bs so it is acceptable to make a general assumption based on the statistical majority. As salubrious as making general assumptions, default reasoning is also based upon conventional and persistent assumptions, along with a lack of contradictive information (Brachma n Levesque, 2004). Various rules of conclusion in non-monotonic reasoning have been proposed and explored, including circumscription (McCarthy, 1980) and negation as failure (Clark, 1978).The closed world assumption is a form of non-monotonic reasoning based on the assumption of complete knowledge. Proposed by Reiter in 1978 the closed world assumption is described as followsIf we assume all relevant positive information is known, anything which is not known to be true must be false. Negative facts may simply be inferred from absence of positive counter parts (Reiter, 1978).To put it in other terms, if P is not provable from the knowledge base available then we must assume not P (P) (Etherington, 1986). This assumption has one major f faithfulness should a person not be in possession of all the relevant information, then the assumption can no longer apply. When (and only when) there is a complete and expert knowledge of the matter being reasoned about is it truly appropriate to em ploy the closed world assumption. In order to continue unwanted inferences of non-monotonic logic, such as the false belief of the closed world assumption, it is necessary to retract any assumption of complete knowledge this leads to the use of unverbalized general assumptions (Brachman Levesque, 2004). If the addition of any newly learned information is contradictive to these general assumptions, adjustments are made (Etherington, 1986) and beliefs are updated or revised (Grdenfors, 2003).The general assumptions made when reasoning non-monotonically are based upon normalcy obtained from knowledge and experience we may assume that James bass guitar has four strings as bass guitars normally do so. But what statistical probability can be assigned to an assumption to label it as normal and what situational factors determine which assumptions can be made? When does a situation deem it appropriate to assume? The complexity of the ever-changing algorithms behind non-monotonic reasoning lead to different results being produced for example, due to slight changes in situation, separate differences and varying information.Default reasoning is arguably one of the most popular forms of non-monotonic reasoning (Reiter, 1978). Based on the principles of default logic (see Nebel, 1991 Goldszmidt Pearl, 1996), default reasoning demonstrates a serious computational crisis known as the peculiar(prenominal)ity principle. The specificity principle states that, when faced with a logical conflict, masses make assumptions based more commonly upon more specific defaults than general ones (Brachman Levesque, 2004) this can lead to stronger conclusions and, although at times, these conclusions are correct, the assumption itself that more specific defaults should be preferred is logically lacking (Brewka, 1994). In order to make up for this problem of specificity, one would have to overtly assign the appropriate priority levels to the defaults in regards to the situation in quest ion.According to the principle of contradiction proposed by Whitehead Russell in 1912, when faced with a logical contradiction, a logical person should be able to disregard the restrictions of their system of reasoning to arrive at a logical conclusion. This however is not the case. In fact, much literature to date has shown human beings to behave in an illogical manner, demonstrating various logical fallacies that people reason with when using parametric quantityation to negotiate life in a complex world (Hahn Oaksford, 2013). A few examples of this are ad hominem, ad Hitlerum and the slimed slope argument. When the character of an case-by-case is attacked, it is suggested that any proposition they put forward should be disregarded this is known as Ad Hominem (Hahn Oaksford, 2013). Ad hominem is a logical fallacy that proposes that once the character or credibility of an individual has been questioned, it is no longer possible for one to have absolute confidence in what that i ndividual says (Harris, 2012).The term ad Hitlerum was coined by Leo Strauss in 1953 it is the name given to the logical argumentation that an idea or a view can be refuted if it is compared to one that may be held by Adolf Hitler, leader of the Nazi Party. Harris et al., in 2012, conducted a series of experiments to see whether or not participants agreed or disagreed with an opinion that may had been similar to a view shared by Hitler. They found that participants demonstrated sensitivity to probabilistic information when they were evaluating whether or not the ad Hitlerum argument was convincing. This showed that people based some of their conclusions on the origin of an argument rather than current facts. The slippery slope argument is another logical fallacy based upon belief or assumption rather than evidence, in this case not doing something for fear of what negative consequences that action may lead to. Corner, Hahn, and Oaksford (2011) outlined four formation components of t he slippery slope argument. An initial proposal (A).. An undesirable outcome (C).. The belief that allowing (A) will lead to a re-evaluation of (C) in the future.. The rejection of (A) based on this belief.inside beliefs in the slippery slope argument there appears to be some sort of implied mechanism which leads to the consequent action (C) directly from the antecedent action (A), eventide though this belief is not based upon prior knowledge nor empirical findings (Hahn Oaksford, 2013).These logical argumentations provide a computational challenge as, should human beings operate logically, conclusions should not be drawn based upon these fallacies however empirical evidence has shown that they frequently are (Harris et al., in 2012). speak Theorum is a formula proposed by Thomas Bayes that can be used to calculate probability in everyday reasoning (Bayes Price, 1763). Bayesian reasoning is the process of reasoning probabilistically under indeterminate circumstances when not all information is known or available (Korb Nicholson, 2011). Using Bayes theorem, we can calculate the likelihood of different outcomes based on prior knowledge and experience of the world, assign probabilistic values and act accordingly (Oaksford Chater, 2007).The use of Bayesian reasoning has provided a new perspective in the analysis of psychological research results from empirical studies have shown great deficits in human ability to reason logically (Wason, 1972). Where it would be most logical for participants to essay evidence that negated their hypothesis, they instead searched for and selected evidence that could only lead to the confirmation of their hypotheses (Hahn, Harris Oaksford, 2013). Using Bayes Theorem, however, Oaksford Chater (1994) demonstrated that this confirmatory response was actually the most probabilistically logical response it involved the selection of data that provided the most information about the truth or falsity of the hypotheses (Hahn, Harris Oaksford, 2013).Persuasion is the process of sending a center to change a belief or incite an action. As well as its personal use, perspective plays a major role in advertising, politics, law and many more public activities (Kamenica Gentzkow, 2009). There are a variety of different Bayesian suasion mechanisms, such as talk games (Crawford Sobel, 1982), persuasion games (Milgrom Roberts, 1986), and signalling games (Spence, 1973) Bnabou and Tirole (2004) further adapted the use of Bayesian persuasion to investigate mechanisms of self-signalling and self-regulation. Throughout all aspects of Bayesian reasoning, one thing remains constant a person (A) can affect the actions of another (B) only by first changing the beliefs of B (Kamenica Gentzkow, 2009).Bayesian persuasion has been criticised in terms of its computational properties. Unlike argumentation, persuasion is concerned with what weighty techniques work and why regardless of whether or not the reasoning was rational (Madsen et al., 2013). Empirically, the results of study into persuasion have shown that the effects on a persons beliefs rarely persist (Cook Flay, 1978). There is also a lack of evidence in literature demonstrating that belief change resulting from a persuasive argument produces behaviour that corresponds with the change in belief (Festinger 1964).Bayesian reasoning shows a great deal of algorithmic complexity. The type of information being reasoned about has an effect upon the conclusions drawn with people showing greater difficulty in reasoning with conditional information than joint information (Lewis Keren, 1999). The probability estimates for a hypothesis are frequently updated with the addition of new relevant information using Bayesian inference. Gigerenzer Hoffrage (1995) analysed thousands of Bayesian problems and found that the adaptation of Bayes theorem using a frequency formats can be used to reduce algorithmic complexity.Bayesian persuasion is also a very complex process, most successful persuasion of belief happens after multiple persuasion attempts over a long period of time (Kamenica Gentzkow, 2009). Hahn and Oaksford (2013) proposed that the most influential factor of persuasion is the quality of the argument being put forward because the quality of an argument is subject to personal opinion it provokes the question what makes an argument good or bad? Human beings are not perfect Bayesians (Mullainathan, Schwartzstein Shleifer, 2008) and while some persuasive activities may reflect a persons failures of rationality, Kamenica and Gentzkow (2009) concluded that a complete understanding of a Bayesian persuasion is needed in order to fully assess results in literature.Recently, psychological study has begun addressing the current issues in the computational and algorithmic levels of different types of reasoning. The effects of emotion upon the ability to reason logically have been called in to question (see Blanchette, 2013 Ayesh, 2003) as has the much greater issue of subjectivity in Bayesian reasoning (see Press, 2009 Ben-David Ben-Eliyahu-Zohary, 2000).

Selection Of Qualitative Descriptive Method Nursing Essay

Selection Of Qualitative Descriptive Method Nursing EssayViolence and enmity against nurses is a complex occupational hazard facing the treat profession. Recently, the phenomenon has started receiving a growing national attention. Paradoxi presagey, the job sphere of influence with the aim of providing to c be for people appears to be at the highest risk of workplace violence. It is difficult to provide an consummateand equal definition of violenceand invasion becausethe opinion of a person of whatconstitutes fierce behavior varies between cultures and socialbackgrounds and often the limits between acceptable and unsatisfactory behavior can bevarious.Thetermaggression is referred generally to thebehaviorthataims to cause harm to an some otherperson. On the other hand, with term of violence we call characterize theattack toapersonwiththeintenttocauseharm.ViolencecanbephysicalorpsychologicalitincludesThreateningbehavior(expressionof endtoharm, threateningbodylanguage, expression ofverbalor writethreats), Verbal abuse, Humiliation, Destruction ofitems, Assault (physical violence, use ofweapons, rape, murder), Robbery.Nurses are among the workers in the workforce that many time during their daily duties can become recipients of a bowelless behaviour. Too frequently, nurses are exposed to violence primarily from patients, patients families, and visitors. This violence can take the form of intimidation, harassment, stalking, beatings, stabbing, shootings, and other forms of assault. The consequences from such(prenominal) behaviors can be many first of all there is a risk of injury. On the other hand, the physiological effects for the nurses that faced a violent incident can result to fear, frustration, lack of trust in hospital administration, and decreased job satisfaction decreased desire for their own profession. Especially, if the violent incidences take place in the early carrier stages of nurses can even lead them to leave their profession. Violence not only affects nurses perspectives of the profession, but it also undermines enlisting and retention efforts which is a disadvantage threaten in the patients care effort.Problem areaThere is considerable evidence that workers in the health care sector are at greater risk of violence than workers in any other sector. The guinea pig Nursing council of Greece reveled data which indicate showed that half of all non-fatal injuries from occupational assaults and violent acts occurred in health care and social services settings (ENE, 2011). In addition, they traverseed that in a annually base, almost 10 in 10,000 employees in the health services sector suffer injuries that require time off from work.In a national survey conducted in 2008, the results report that in a generally at least 86 per cent of treat staff has been the recipient of a violent behaviour during their employment. In the same survey, data certify that less than the half of the physical violence incidents against the n urses were reported to the appropriate authorities (Gerberich et al., 2004). This, it happens mainly because of devil reasons a) The nursing staff has inadequate knowledge in defining some their rights or they do not trust the national system about the administration of their case regarding the dispensing of justice. b) A big part of the nursing staff has genuine the wrong belief that the violent incidents are an expected part of the daily nursing routine that is inevitable. These factors are challenges that should be combated in the nursing profession. The requirements in decree to achieve this goal are many enhance of relevant legislation, administrative support of professionals, improvement of knowledge of nurses about their rights and the appropriate naming of a legitimately accepted behaviour. Moreover, the recruitment and retention problem resulting from this violence is especially problematic. According to projections from the Greek Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 20.000 new nurses result replace presently workings register nurses by the next ten years in Greece. (Greek Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2011). This number can be consider as a much more higher if taking into consideration the number of nurses that are going to move in specialties that is less possible to phase a violent behaviour from patient of their familys members, for instance working in query area. In addition, recent interrogation data indicate that more than the twenty per cent of registered nurses positions are vacant (ENE, 2001). Furthermore, this reduced number of the health care staff poses a risk regarding the receiving of good quality patient care across the Greek National Health care system, which reasonable is going to be decreased (ENE, 2004).The last years, there have been many efforts to characterize the dimensions size of the phenomenon of violence against nurses some of them containing educational seminars of the violence in the workforce or the cultural t aste of health care providers about the violence during the performance of their occupational duties. However, only few of such activities have been tested in a adequate level in ordain to describe set their effectiveness or implemented on a wide scale basis.Sources of Data and interrogationOne of the basic challenges in documenting violence that nurses have faced during their occupation is the absence of systematically organized and equanimous data in the past. Problems with the availability of data include few data ancestors to determine the magnitude of the problem and variations in definitions, data sources, and orders utilize in seek. interrogation QuestionWhat are the nursing staff responses when caring for patients who express violent behaviors within the national health care units in Sparta, Greece?Aims and objectives Purpose and specific research issuesThe aim of this mull over is to investigate the effects of a aggressive behaviour from patients to the nursing s taff. There bequeath be an effort to meet the following objectives1. To report the experiences and responses of nursing staff when caring for patients with who exhibit aggressive behaviors.2. To identify effective ways in improving the quality of nursing practice in this area.Research MethodologyHere we focus on the research design and method for the research proposal. The selection of the appropriate research method is essential in order to achieve the aims and objectives of a study. Research design, simply can be referred as a map that explains all the conditions and the data under which the study was performed. The basic designs used in most of the research studies in order to collect the data and extract the research questions are methods based on qualitative or decimal abridgment. The goal of quantitative research is to generate research data that can be analyzed using numerical or statistical techniques. It actually focuses on the size, prevalence, frequency and quantifiabl e aspects of the analyzed problem (Polit Beck 2010). However, many detectives believe that the quantitative come is limited because it does not address the meaning of life experience in depth that qualitative research can. On the other hand qualitative approaches are mainly suitable for collection of information with more a native approach regarding the examining phenomenon (Burns Grove 2008). Barbour (2009) suggests that the qualitative method is more adequate in order for studies that are more interested for the effect of a problem on the individuals associated with it. In this project, because of the typeface of the aims and objectives of the proposed research we have adopted a qualitative approach for analyzing explaining our final data. By choosing a qualitative method for the data analysis, we will be able to provide a detailed in depth explanation of the experiences and responses (Burns Groves 2011) of nursing staff who work with patients who express violent behavio ur.Selection of qualitative descriptive methodThe number of approaches exist within qualitative research are various some of them focusing on cultural national or sociological effects (Burns Grove 2011). All these approaches can provide us with valuable results, however in our case another qualitative research approach is selected this method is called qualitative descriptive approach. The goal of qualitative description is not detailed explanation of the problem in order to conclude in the formation of a sociological explanation of a phenomenon. Here we aim for a straight description phenomenon is desired. This means we are not going to move apart from the original data (Sandelowski 2000). This data analysis approach can provide as with the advantage of a direct explanation initially and then understanding of the nursing staff responses behaviour.Sample / PopulationThe term of population can be referred as the total number of elements in which data can be extracted from. A samp le is a subset of a population selected to partake in a study (Polit Beck 2010) which will be a source of information (Clifford Clark 2004). realization and determination of the population who is more appropriate for our data collection from is the initial step of our research. The sampling source should be appropriate to provide us with adequate related to our research data. The Qualitative descriptive method is based on the analysis of a large volume of information. For this reason our sample population source is going to be a limited small number of nursing staff. In this project, we are going to use a sample of 50 participants. We are aware of the limitations of small sampling sizes, however qualitative research is more concerned with the phenomenon of interest and not the applicability of the findings in other contexts. The inclusion and riddance criteria for participants in the groups will be as followsInclusion Criteria Nursing staff that have face a violent incident in th e past from a patient or from a member of his/her family. More than one year work experience within the nursing field.Exclusion criteria Agency staff working in the health care units at the time of the study. Staff with less than one year of work experience. Clinical nurse managers (as many times are responsible, directly or indirectly, for the violent behaviour).Data collectionThe data collection method should opera hat suit the aims and objectives of the research. In our case the answers to our main research questions cannot be closed type answers. For this reason, we are going to work in a dialogue basis with the participants of the study. This, will provide us the required answers, open type answers about the experience and thoughts of nurses faced a violent incident in the past during the performance of their professional duties (Burns Grove 2011).Pilot study ProcedureWhen the methodology has been developed, it is advisable to test it out before applying it to the actual sa mple. This procedure of testing it out is done by a means of a pilot study (Welman et al. 2005). According to Burns Grove (2011) a pilot study is simply a smaller version of the actual study done in proviso of a proposed study. Conducting a pilot study will authenticate the feasibility of conducting a larger scale study. This will help the research team to agnize any problems with the research methodology and to refine and develop data collection instruments. For the proposed research a pilot study must be tested upon a smaller sample with a similar design as the actual study (10% of the final). A smaller focus group with only five nursing staff will be conducted by the researcher for the pilot study. The participants of the pilot study will not be permitted to participate in the main study. Depending on the outcomes of the pilot there maybe areas in the research methodology that the researcher may need to be modify.Data analysisAccording to Polit Beck (2010) data analysis is th e systematic organisation and synthesis of research data. The analysis of data will take place in parallel with a data collection. The researcher intends to employ qualitative content analysis. This is the ideal method for the analysis of qualitative description (Sandelowski 2000). Hsieh Shannon (2005) define qualitative content analysis as a research method for the subjective interpretation of the content of text data through the systematic classification process of coding and identifying themes or patterns. Inductive and deductive are the two methods of qualitative content analysis. The researcher will use the inductive approach because analysis is derived mostly from raw data. This approach will allow the researcher to immerge themselves in the data to allow new insight to emerge.Ethical ConsiderationsEthical issues are a central part of the research process (Burns Grove 2011). The principles underlie research are universal and concern issues such as honesty and respect for the rights of individuals in the study (Welman et al. 2005). In Ireland accountability when carrying out nursing research is specified by National Nursing Council (ENE) code of professional conduct for each nurse and midwife which states In taking part in research, the principles of confidentiality and the purvey of appropriate information to enable an informed judgment to be made by the patient must be safeguarded. The nurse has an obligation to ascertain that the research is sanctioned by the appropriate body and to go over that the rights of the patient are protected at all times. The nurse should be aware of ethical policies and procedures in his/her area of practice. The right to self determinationThis ethical principal is based on respect for a persons autonomy (Burns Grove 2011). Participants in the research will be allowed to make a free and informed choice without coercion (Holloway Wheeler 2002). Potential participants will have the right to ask any questions concerning the study, recall to give information and withdraw from the study at any stage. The right to Anonymity and confidentialityAccording to Barbour (2008) the need to preserve confidentiality and anonymity is an enshrined principle when undertaking qualitative research. Anonymity refers to the safest way of shielding confidentiality (Polit Beck 2010). Details such as names of the participants, location and residential care home names will be kept anonymous throughout the study and within the findings. Also we will ensure that identifying information is safely locked away. Passwords will be put in place to ensure that information in the form of computer software/data the data is not accessed by anyone else other than the members of the research team. Setting up these procedures will go on any accidental breech of confidentiality (Polit Beck 2010).Proposed outcome of the studyA report that will outline the research design together with the procedures applied for data collection and an alysis will be written up at the end of the research process. A clear explanation of the findings and results will also be written up by the researcher. The researcher anticipates that the findings of the study will provide insight into the responses together with experiences of nursing staff when caring for patients with dementia who exhibit aggressive behaviours in Spartas health care units. This will also give the nursing staff an opportunity to reflect on their care for people with dementia who exhibit these contend behaviours. If the findings of the proposed study are consistent with findings in the literature reviewed, then the following recommendations will be made Increased education and training on aggression mainly focused for nurses in residential care homes. More research into the nursing staff role in residential care homes to establish best practice The introduction of local and national Policies and procedures regarding reporting and recording incidences of aggressio n exhibited by people with dementia. Set up of support systems for staff who experience aggression in this environment at a local and national levelLimitationsThis is the first research study that will be carried out by researcher and this lack of experience may add on to the limitations of the study.Risks / benefits

Nerve And Tendon Gliding Exercises Health And Social Care Essay

Nerve And Tendon slide causes Health And Social Cargon Essay articulatio radiocarpea b iodine dig Syndrome was first described by Sir James Paget in 1854 but the term was coined by Moeirisch. It is a syndrome of compression neuropathy of median nerve at the wrist. INTRODUCTIONCarpal Tunnel Syndrome results in considerable discomfort and pain, limitation of activities of daily living, loss of sleep and work disability. (Levine et al., 1993).The Carpal Tunnels floor is made up of the 8 tiny wrist bones. Its roof is a thick ligament called the transverse carpal ligament. 9 tendons pass through this tunnel. 4 of the 9 tendons bend the tips of the riffle, a nonher 4 of the 9 tendons bend the middle joints of the finger, and the 9th tendon bends the finger tip.The median nerve passes through this tunnel. When there is swelling or if there is thickening of the ligament the nerve gets pinched or compresses. With enough compression carpal tunnel symptoms occur. If the compression is severe or occurs over a longer period of time the nerve may change shape and flatten causing some eternal damage.Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs due to many causes likeWrist injuryCARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME IN PREGNANCYCarpal tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is more frequent in pregnancy because the systemic process increases the extra capsular fluid retention by the hormone Prolactin and produce soft tissue swelling in the later stages (third trimester) of their pregnancies. The Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can thus be produced by compression or swelling of the median nerve in its synovial sheath (Gelberman et al., 1981 Snell, 2000 Szabo, 1989 Primal Pictures, 2001 Rempel et al., 1999).CTS have been recognized as a common complication of pregnancy (HeckmanSassard, 1994). The pathophysiology of pregnancy related CTS (PRCTS) has been mostly attributed to redistribution of fluids (Ekman-Ordeberg et al., 1987 Wand, 1990 Pauda et al.,2001).Signs And Symptoms1.Pain that shoots from the hand up the subsection as far as the shoulder.2.Tingling in the hands during the day or the night that disrupts sleep and limits the ability to grasp objects with the han ds.3.Weak feeling in the hands, and the inability to extract up small objects.4. The feeling that the hands are swollen, even if they do not appear to be so.5.Burning numbness and tingling sensation in the turn over and first trio fingers.6.Weakness in the muscle at the base of the thumb, near the palm.Motor weakness will be seen in abductor pollicis brevis, flexor polices brevis and opponens policis brevis. peaceful flexion or hyperextension of the affected hand at the wrist for more than one minute may worsaen symptoms.(Phalen.G.S.,1966). Percussion of the median nerve at the wrist causes paresthesis of the digits (Steward.J.D.,1978).Early Treatment1.Splinting the wrist in a neutral plaza.2.Avoiding the activities which causes pain if possible3.Tendon and nerve gliding exercises.4.Massaging5.Elevating the arm or flicking6.Neural mobilization7.Ultrasound, icing, as pain relieving modality etc.Non operative treatment s is more effective in early stageas such as NSAIDS and local corticosteroids injections. If the problem is severe surgical procedure is made to release the carpal tunnel.Diagnostic criteriaHarrington etal suggested surveillance criteria for carpal tunnel syndrome should be pain or parasthesia or sensory losss in the median nerve distribution and one of the followingTinels sign positivePhalens trial positiveNocturnal exacerbation of symptomsMotor loss with wasting of the abductor pollicis brevisAbnormal nerve conduction studies.Nocturnal and exertonal dyesthesias in the radial half of the palm occur in 10% to 25% of pregnant women. When the carpal tunnel syndrome occurs, the symptoms area more often bilateral. Onset of symptoms is typical during the third trimester. Because of itas trnsient nature carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy is best treated by using right footmarks, such as tendon and nerve gliding exercises. That subsequent pregnanciesaraae frequently associated with repeated episodes of carpal tunnel syndrome confirms the ass ociation of carpal tunnel syndrome and pregnancy.Gliding ExercisesTendon gliding and median nerve-gliding exercises are two types of exercises that may help with carpal tunnel syndrome. These exercises are thought to relieve pressure on the median nerve and stretch the carpal ligaments, which also helps decrease pressure. They are aolso thought to help blood fow out of the carpal tunnel, which can help decrease fluid pressure. fist Flexion ExercisesFist Flexion Exercises(also known as tendon gliding exercises) move your fingers through five positions while your wrist corset in a neutral position(meaning it is not bend). To perform this exercise, do the following1.Start with your fingers straight.2.Make a hook fist and then slide by to a straight hand.3.Make a straight fist and then return to a straight hand.4.Make a full fist andthen return to a straight hand.Hold each positons for seven seconds amd do 10 repetitions. Repeat three times to five timeas a day.Median Nerve Gliding Ex ercisesFor median nerve gliding exercises ou move yout thumb through 6 positi0nswhile your wrist stays a neutral position. To perform this exercise, do the following1.Begin by making a fist with your wrisat in the neutral position.2.Straigthen your fingers anad thumb.3.Bend your wrist back and move your thumb away from your palm4.Turn your wrist palm up5.Use your other hand to gently pull uyout thumb farther away from your palm.Hold each position for seven seconds, and do five repetitions. Repeat three ti five times a day.Effectiveness of the Tendon and nerve gliding exercises used as conservativist treatment approachesd in relieving the symptoms of the carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy.(Lamia Pinar, Asgel Enhos et al.,)DefinitionCarpal tunnel syndrome is a condition caused by compression of median nerve in spite of appearance the carpal tunnel leads to sensory changesover the lateral side of the hand and muscle weakness in thenar eminence, results in pain, numbness and ting ling of fingers. It usually occurs in the third trimester of pregnancy.Aim of StudyA STUDY OF EFFECTIVENESS OF NERVE AND TENDON GLIDING EXERCISES AS TREATMENT APPROACH TO CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME DURING PREGNANCY.OBJECTIVESThe aim of this study is to determine from the available evidence the effectiveness of Nerve and Tendon gliding exercises programme in carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy using operational Status Scale for performance and Visual Analogue measure for wrist pain.HYPOTHESISNULL HYPOTHESISThere may not be no significance between the nerve and tendon gliding exercise programme and carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy.Alternate HypothesisNerve and Tendon Gliding Exercise programme will be effective in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy.Review of literature1.Lamia Pinar, Asgel Enhos et.alConducted an experiment study on total of 26 patients with caroal tunnel syndrome were shared out into two groups. In one group the volar splint were applie d and trained to modify their functional activities in accordance witrh conservative treatment. In group two tendon gliding exercises were continued for 4 weeks with numeric rating scale and Gonuiometry. It comcluded that group two reported excellent results in pain reduction and functional improvement than gropup one.2.Akaline.E.,et.al.,(2002)Conducted an experi kind study on carpal tunnel syndrome with a total of 28 patients with 36 hands of CTS, which were divided into two groups, with 14 patients each. One group was treated with nerve and tendon gliding exercises along with custom made neutral volar splint, and another group was treataed with only neutral volar splint for 4 weeks continuously. Patientas satisfaction was invesatigated during the follow up ranging from 5-11 month, with a mean of 8 month. The study explained that, of those patients who performed nerve and tendon gliding exercise with wearing custom made neutral volar splint, 93% reported good results, and of those patients who have only wearing neutral volar splint, 72% reported good results. American Journal of Physical Medicine Rehabilitation, 2002, Feb81(2), Pp108-13).3.Rosemaryn .L.M., et.al.,(1998)Conducted an experimental study on carpal tunnel syndrome with 240 hands, from 197 patients. They were divided into two groups. Patients in some(prenominal) groups were treated with standard conservative methods, and those in one group were also treated with a program of nerve and tendon gliding exercise of those who did not perform the nerve and tendon gliding exercise, 71.2% downstairswent surgery compared with only 43.0% of patients who did perform them. Patient in experimental group, who did not undergo surgery were interviewed at an fair action time of 23 months (range, 14-38 months), of these 53 patients, 47(89%) responded to this detailed interview of those 47, who responded, 70.2% reported good or excellent results, 19.2% remained symptomatic, and 10.6% were non-complaint.(Journal o f Hand Therapy, 1998, Jul-Sep11(3),171-9).4.Dakowick.A.,(2005)the purpose of the study was to evaluate the utility in conservative treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome. 40 Patients aged 30-72 years, with unilateral CTS cofirmed by EMG examination were include. The patients were divided into 3 groups based on clinical symptoms according to Whitley. The character of pain, its frequency and intensity (VAS Scale) were determined using parameter. Decrease in pain was observed by the usae of VAS. (Rock Akad Med Bialmyst, 200550-suppi196-8).5.Bonebrake.A.R.,et.al.,(1990)the study was designed to respect the efficacy of a proposed new and unique programme relative to treatment. The patients diagnosed as CTS were compared to control to a control population showing no symptoms. Prior to undergoing treatment and following completion of the treatment programme. Results indicate that individuals with CTS had pregnantly lower shelters in strength, ROM, and slower task performance than did the controlratings of pain anad distress were also significantly higher than the control groups. Analysis of the post treatmaent cases revealed statistically significant improvements in several measures of up to statistically significant improvements in several measure of up to 25% over post treatment abide bys. Significant improvement was also shown to several ROM measures of upto 22%. Finally, a significant reduction of 15% pain and distress ratings was demonstrated in the post treatment cases. (Journal of Manipulative Physical Therapy, 1994 (May)17(4)246-249).6.Scrimsha.S.R.,et.al.,(2001)Conducted a comparative study between the responsiveness of Visual analogue scale and McGill pain questionnaire. Measures in 75% patients and concluded that the VAS was a better tool than the McGill pain questionnaire for measuring pain in clinical practise.7.O.Baysal, Z.Altay et.alConducted a study in 28 female patient with clinical and electrophysiologic evidence of bilateral carapal tunnel syndro me. They were divided into two groups. Group 1 acquire tendon gliding exercise with splinting. Group 2 received splinting with ultrasound for a period of 4 weeks with Visual analogue scale and Functional status scale.8.Bringer TL.,Roger IC et.alconducted a randomized trial in totoal of 61 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. They were divided into four groups. Group 1 received neutral wrist and MCP exercise group. Group 2 received neutral wrist MCP exercise along with splint. Group 3 received wrist cock-up exercise and Group 4 received wrist cock-up exercise and tendon gliding exercise along with splintas perfoarmed 3 times a day. The tool used to asses the function is functional Status Scale and Symptom Severity Scale. There was significant effect in Group4.9. Sonodyn, Sieman(2000)Conducted an experiment on study of 16 patients. They was treataed with Ultrasound for a period of 4 weeks and the pain was assessed. In this, 88% reported good reasult and reduction pain was assessed b y using Visual Analogue Scale.10. Davis.P.T.,et. al., (1998)Conducted an experimental study to compare the efficiency of conservative management care with chiropractic care in treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome. The group with 9 week of treatment and a 1 month follow-up interview. 96 eligible patients with symptoms were conformend by clinical exam and nerve conduction studies. Conservative treamtment included mobilization of carpal bone, soft tissues, joints (three treatment per week for 2 wee, two treatment per week for 3 week, and one treatment per week for 4 wek). Main outcomes measures were pre and post assessment of self reported physical and mental distress, nerve-conduction studies, results show that there was significant improvement in perceived function and comfort, neve conductuion and finger sensation. (Journal of Manipulative Physiotherapy, 1999 June22(55)348-9)11. FD Burke, J Ellis, H McKenna, M J Bradley(2003)Carpal Tunnel syndrome of mild to moderate severity can oft en be effectively treated in a primary care environment. Work space modifications wrist splints tendon and nerve gliding exercises are of benefit and useful for symptomatic women in the third trimester of pregnancy.12.Shaafi Sh*, Naimain Sh*, Iromlou H*, Sayyah Melli M**A convenience sample of 90 pregnant women (30 women from each trimester) were referred from Al-Zahra Hospital of the electrodiagnostic ward of examined clinically and then by electroneurodiagnostic tests. There were suspected symptoms of CTS in 45 patients. The most frequent symptom and sign were hands paresthesia(34%) and positive tinel and phalen sign(each22%). CTS was definite diagnosis in 15 women(16.6%) by electroneurodiagnostic studies. Mild bilateral involvement was seen in 73.3% of patients. There was a meaningful relationship between CTAS and trimester that 26.6% of patients were at third trimester. Also there was a meaningful relation to age. The CTS was more frequent in ilder women.13.BaumannF, Karlikaya G, Yuksel G, Citci B, Kose G, Tireli H(2007)Pregnant women in the third trimesater (n=69) and age-matched non-pregnant women (n=40) asymptomatic for CTS were included in the studyNerve conductn studies of themedian and the ulnar nerves across the carpal tunnel were bilaterally performed with the standard techniques. All the median sensory nerve conduction studies performed from the ring finger and palmar region to the wrist. Median sensory nerve latencies from palmar branches to wrist were significantly longer in the pregnant group.(p14. OConner.D.,et.al.,(2002)Conducted an experimental study to evaluate the effectiveness of non surgical treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome versus a placebo or other non-surgical control interventions in improving clinical outcome. Twenty ine trials involving 884 people were included. In one trial involving 21 people carpal bone mobilization significantly improved symptoms later on three weeks, (weighted mean difference is -1.4395% confidence legal s eparation is 2.19 to -0.67), compared to no treamtment. Current evidence shows significant short term bebefit from carpal bone mobilization. It causes 20% of all compression syndromes especially in the third trimester of pregnancies.A total number of 10 subjects of age group of 25-32 years were selected for the study. Visual Analogue Scale for pain and Functional Status Scale for functional ability were taken as parameters to measure the affliction of patients. Pre test data has collected for the subjects and computed. They were subjected to tendon and nerve gliding exercises for 4 weeks. The result of post teat of same parameter was recorded for comparison after 4 weeks of treatment. The paired t test was used to compare the pre VS post test results of subjects.Caarpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition among people who do repetitive wrk al l day lke punching keys on computer or cash story or even pressing on the strings of a violin. Pregnant women are also susceptible to carpal tunnel syndrome even if they do not type or play msic all day. The studies have shown that one out of four pregnant women complains of the syndrome usually in the second or third trimester of pregnancy when fluid retention in the aarms and hands is more likely to put pressure on the nerve that leads to the hands anad fingers. The dying(p) system is normally under some pressure and tension. If the tension is breaked there results some movement(Millesi.et.al.1972).Dackowicz . A.,, conducted an study to evaluate the usefulness in conservative treatment of the carpal tunnel syndrome.According to butler neural tissue requires movement to promote healing and restoration of optimum mechanical properties.Decreased neural mobility and adverse mechanical tension in nervous system can generate pain.(Butler and Elvey 1978).Mchellan and Swash in 1976 noted that wrist and fingers extensor wil move the median nerve at wrist 2 or 4 times more than the middle of the upper arm.According to Asgel Enhos tendon requires movement to promote functional ability.Rosmaryn and Asgel Enhos said that the decreased tendon gliding in nervous system can generate pain. Rosmaryn proposed that radicular pain might be mobilizing the involved nerve. The mechanical respose is tendon movement in the cross sectional shape and viscoelastic function. So the treatment of tendon Gliding Exercise mah normalize the pressure gradient around the nervous system and releases the tendon thus reducing pain improving functional ability.SummarySummaryThe objective of the study was to determine from the available evidence the effectiveness of tendon and nerve gliding exercises programmed in reducing pain and of increasing the functional ability in the carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy. To conduct the study, the total number of 10 carpal tunnel pataients during pregnancy w ith both unilateral and bilateral involvement at the age group 25 to 32 years, who were suitable for inclusive criteria was selected by Quasi experimental purposive random sampling technique and informed consents were obtained from subjects individually. The pre and post test of VAS and FSS were conducted and recorded before and after treatment programmed for 4 weeks of nerve and tendon gliding exercises inmcarpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy. The paired t test is used to compare the pre and post test values of nerve anad tendon gliding exercises and the pain and functional ability are computed by the VAS and FSS Scale. In the analysis and interpretation of the data based on the Visual Analogue Scale for pain the paired t- test value (13.28), which was greater than the tabulated paired t test val

Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844â€89). Poems 1918, Spring and Fall: To a young child :: essays research papers fc

Gerard Manley Hopkins (184489). Poems 1918, Spring and Fall To a young childMRGART, re you greving Over Goldengrove unleaving? Leves, lke the things of man, you With your fresh thoughts care for, can you? h s the heart grows older 5 It will come to such sights colder By and by, nor spare a sigh Though worlds of wanwood leafmeal lie And yet you wll weep and know why. Now no matter, child, the name 10 Srrows sprngs re the same.Nor talk had, no nor mind, expressed What heart heard of, ghost guessed It s the blight man was born for, It is Margaret you mourn for.Gerard Manley Hopkins was an innovator whose poetry was not published until decades after his death. Hopkins was born in Stratford, Essex, which is near London. He attended Balliol College, University of Oxford. While attending the university, Hopkins was sporadically occupied with verse writing. His passion for religion becomes clearly evident during this date through his poems. His poems revealed a very Catholic character, mos t of them being abortive, the beginnings of things, ruins and wrecks, as he called them. (Gardner 6) In 1866, he converted to Roman Catholicism, during the Oxford movement. John Henry Newman real him into the Roman Catholic Church. He left Oxford to become a priest, and entered the Jesuit Order in 1868. This is the time when Gerard Manley Hopkins presented a conflict of a man disunite between two vocations, religion and the aesthetic world. He also presented a heroic struggle of a man who was so dedicated to one employment that he deliberately sacrificed another profession based on the belief that God willed it to be so. Hopkins is well known for his creation of the term inscape. Inscape can be considered as an individual distinctive beauty. The sensation of inscape, any vivid mental image, is known as instress. (Gardner 11) For Hopkins, inscape was more than sensory impression. It was an insight by Divine grace into an ultimate reality by seeing the pattern, air, and melody as it were Gods side. (Gardner 27) In "Spring and Fall", Hopkins demonstrates a separation between military personnel and nature and a separation between humanity and God. His use of imagery and his sympathetic tone allows the readers to make both distinctions and similarities between adult and child, nature and man, and sensible and intuitive knowledge. The poem is addressed to a child.

Technology Through the Decades :: essays papers

Technology Through the DecadesTechnology has come a long way since the first institutionalized schoolroom. The leap in advancement have been their greatest in the past 100 years alone. But the classroom we hunch forward today in American destination has made many adjustments and achievement over many centuries of work, but this paper will only address the past 2 centuries. The modern classroom, with computers, internet, graphing calculators, and video mechanism, would not exist if not for the many people who worked to invent the machines we have. The 1800s produced many advancements to the classroom that, though very rudimentary to todays standards, became the can for learning on a large scale. Some of which are still in use today. In 1841 the chalkboard was introduced into the classroom. This was very beneficial to learning incorporate audio and visual techniques to learning. Teachers could now draw for students concepts such as atoms and molecules, that were complica ted to express. Students found this invention beneficial because now the student knew what teachers were saying, what key points they needed to know were, and nothing was lost in the communication. The inclusion of the radio in the 1920s (Studio Miramar), was also a beneficial invention. When the radio was invited to be a map of classroom learning, teachers were able to more effectively keep the students on top of current event, involve others opinions or knowledge of different topics, and be able to include shade into history classes. This last reason would become the base for broadening of curriculum multiculturally.Another major change to the curriculum came in the 1940s when movies became a part of the classroom scene (Studio Miramar). This had an impact both politically and with general education. Politically, propaganda or reprogramming with videos would be a purpose that movies would play. With such films as those that expressed how the proper American should act could be view, such as during World War II with Duck and Cover or Evil Communists or even Uncle Sam Wants You videos became a meaningful nationalism method of reaching children. But movies also play the part of an educational tool. Films about chemicals, of both the dangers and benefits of them, or safety films like Stop, Drop, and put became prevalent. Like the radio, television, introduced in the 1950s to the educational scenes (Studio Miramar), has become an even easier method of keeping students on top of current event.

Depicting the Various Traits and Characteristics of Leadership in Liter

Depicting the Various Traits and Characteristics of Leadership in Literature When discussing any triumphant or flourishing shaping or institution, the main attribute which will evermore surface when examining the true fabric of what allows a particular organization or institution to excel, will always be attractorship.Leadership is portrayed at its pinnacle in William Brattons Turn most, Rudolph Giulianis book Leadership, Oren Hararis book The Leadership Secrets of Colin Powell, and David Lipskys book suddenly American Four Years at West Point. In each of these works, the author does an exceptional job of depicting the various traits and characteristics necessary for being a powerful and effective leader. William Bratton, born and raised in Boston, was appointed as New York Citys new police commissioner by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani on December 2, 1993. William Bratton was a leader who spent his whole life turning around low-performing, dysfun-ctional police departments. It was his s pecialty and it soon became his trademark. Bill Bratton hit the ground test as the commissioner of police by implementing several policies and visions that he had, that many believed would be unfathomable in policing. His goals were revolutionary and unprecedented and would not be possible to deliver the goods if not for his incredible leadership ability. His ability as an effective leader allowed him to select intelligent, experienced, and quality individuals who shared identical beliefs and visions as he did. Any leader would agree that anything is possible through optimism, intelligent planning, and preparation, but nothing is possible if your chosen executives lack the leaders confidence to operate freely and curb out the organizations ultimate goals. Bratton was a believer in Theodore Roosevelts ideology that the best executive is the one who has sense enough to hen-peck good men to do what he wants done, and self- restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it. Bratton was a master motivator. His optimism rubbed off on everyone around him and this reflected their performance. He had a belief that leadership is the ability to enthuse and encourage the people in your organization so highly that, whatever idea is put into action, they embrace it so fully they forget the genesis and assume it was their own (Bratton pg.155). This was Br... ...spects of what makes up an effective leader, it is clear that there cannot be one clear- cut and dry definition of what a leader is. A leader is a make up of many different attributes and qualities. An effective Leader encompasses all of the attributes which go along with facilitating ideas and allowing an organization to grow and flourish, as well as inspiring and motivating those he or she oversees to do the same. A Leader has the ability and almost the physiological reaction action to surface when it is time for a difficult task to be accomplished or a difficult decision to be made. Leadershi p may be a type of precaution but a manager is not always a leader. Leadership is the art of accomplishing more than the science of management says is possible.
